How to Install a Free App from the App Store on a Mac
Also available for: Windows 11
What you need: A Mac connected to the internet, the exact name of the free app you want, the name of the company that makes it (as shown on the app's own website or in the message that recommended the app), and your Apple Account email address (or phone number) and password.
- Click the App Store icon in the Dock, the row of app icons along the edge of the screen. It is a blue square with a white letter A drawn from a pencil, a brush, and a ruler. If you do not see it there, click the Apple menu (the Apple logo) in the upper-left corner of the screen, then click App Store.
- Look at the lower-left corner of the App Store window. If it shows your name, go to step 3. If it shows Sign In, click it, type your Apple Account email address (or phone number) and password, then click Sign In. If a window asks for a verification code, type the code shown on your other Apple device or sent to your phone. If you cannot sign in, click Cancel and stop here, because the App Store needs an Apple Account to install apps.
- Click the search field in the upper-left corner of the App Store window, type the app's name, and press Return.
- In the results, click the name or icon of the one whose name matches the app's name exactly. Its page opens.
- Find the company name shown near the app's name. It should match the company that makes your app, even if it has extra words such as Inc. or Ltd. If it does not match, click the back arrow near the top of the window and choose a different result with the same name. If no result has the right company name, stop here without installing anything.
- Look at the button on the app's page. If it shows Open, the app is already installed; go to step 10. If it shows Get, click Get, then go to step 7. If it shows a cloud symbol with a downward arrow, you have had this app before; click the symbol and go to step 8. If it shows anything else, such as a price, do not click it. Stop here, because these steps cover only free apps.
- The button changes to Install. Click Install.
- If a window asks you to confirm, check it first: if it shows a price, click Cancel and stop here. If it asks you to use Touch ID, rest your finger on the Touch ID key at the top-right corner of the keyboard. If it asks for your password, type your Apple Account password and press Return. If you do not know the password, click Cancel and stop here.
- Wait while the App Store downloads and installs the app. A progress indicator appears where the button was. Larger apps can take several minutes.
- When the button shows Open, click Open.
Expected result: The app's button shows Open, and the app opens when you click it.
