How to Play a DVD with VLC Media Player on a Mac

Also available for: Windows 11

What you need: A Mac with VLC Media Player 3 installed, a DVD movie, and a DVD drive. Have the drive's USB cable or adapter if it connects by USB.

  1. Connect the DVD drive to the Mac if it is external. Connect its power supply if it has one. If the Mac asks whether to allow the accessory to connect, click Allow.
  2. Insert the DVD and wait for the Mac to recognize it. If DVD Player opens automatically, click DVD Player in the menu bar at the top of the screen, then Quit DVD Player.
  3. Click Finder (the blue smiling face) in the Dock, the row of app icons along the edge of the screen.
  4. Click Go at the top of the screen, then Applications.
  5. Click VLC twice quickly to open it.
  6. In VLC, click File at the top of the screen, then Open Disc.
  7. In the Disc tab, check that your inserted DVD is selected in the disc list. Wait for it to appear if the drive is still reading it.
  8. Click Open.
  9. If the DVD's menu appears, click Play or Play Movie on that menu.

Expected result: The DVD movie plays in VLC Media Player.
