How to Choose a Printer for One PDF Document on a Mac

Also available for: Windows 11

What you need: A Mac, a saved PDF document, and the name of a printer you have used with this Mac. These steps use Preview.

Before you begin: Turn on the printer and load its paper. If you normally use a printer cable, connect it.

  1. Click Finder (the blue smiling face) in the Dock, the row of app icons along the edge of the screen.
  2. In the menu bar at the top of the screen, click Go, then the folder containing your PDF, such as Documents or Downloads. Open a folder inside it by clicking that folder twice quickly. Continue until you see the PDF you want.
  3. Click the PDF once. Click File, move the pointer onto Open With to open its menu, then click Preview.
  4. In Preview, click File, then Print.
  5. Click the name currently shown beside Printer to open the printer list.
  6. Click the name of the printer you want to use.
  7. Check that the correct name is now shown beside Printer.
  8. Set Copies to 1, check the page preview, then click Print.

Expected result: The PDF is sent to the printer whose name you selected.
