How to Put a Mac to Sleep and Wake It Up
Also available for: Windows 11
What you need: A Mac that is turned on.
Before you begin: Save any document you are working on. Sleep keeps your open apps and documents where they are, and saving also keeps a copy on the Mac.
- Click the Apple menu (the Apple logo) in the upper-left corner of the screen.
- Click Sleep. The screen goes dark. This is normal: the Mac is resting and using much less power, and it is not turned off.
- Wait a few seconds. To wake the Mac, move the mouse or press any key on the keyboard. The screen lights up again.
- If a box asks for your password, sign in by following How to Sign In to a Mac.
- If the screen is still dark after 10 seconds, click the mouse button or press down on the trackpad once. Leave the power button alone, because holding it down turns the Mac off and you could lose work that is not saved.
Expected result: The screen is lit again and your open apps and documents are where you left them.
