How to Change Your Desktop Picture on Windows 11

Also available for: macOS

What you need: A Windows 11 computer. These steps use one of the pictures that Windows shows in Settings.

  1. Click Start (the Windows logo) on the taskbar at the bottom of the screen.
  2. Type Settings, then click Settings in the search results to open it.
  3. Click Personalization on the left, then click Background on the right.
  4. Find Personalize your background. Click the box beside it, which shows a small downward arrow. If the box already shows Picture, go to step 6.
  5. In the list that opens, click Picture.
  6. Look at the row of small pictures below, under Recent images. Click one of those pictures. The desktop behind the Settings window changes to that picture right away.
  7. Close Settings by clicking the X in the upper-right corner of the Settings window.

Expected result: After the Settings window closes, the picture you chose appears on your desktop.
