Windows 11
How to Make a Window Bigger or Smaller on Windows 11
Also available for: macOS
What you need: A Windows 11 computer. These steps use File Explorer as the example window.
- Click Start (the Windows logo) on the taskbar at the bottom of the screen.
- Type File Explorer, then click File Explorer in the search results to open it.
- Look at the upper-right corner of the File Explorer window. Three buttons sit side by side: a short line (Minimize), a square or two overlapping squares in the middle, and an X (Close). Do not click the X, because it closes the window.
- If the middle button shows two overlapping squares (Restore Down), the window already fills the screen. Click it once, and the window becomes smaller. The middle button now shows a single square.
- Click the middle button with the single square (Maximize). A box of small layout pictures may appear when the pointer rests on the button; click the button itself, not the pictures. The window now fills the whole screen except the taskbar, and the middle button shows two overlapping squares.
- Click the middle button with the two overlapping squares (Restore Down).
Expected result: The window returned to its smaller size, and the middle button shows a single square again.
