Windows 11
How to Rename a File or Folder on Windows 11
Also available for: macOS
What you need: A Windows 11 computer and the file or folder you want to rename. Rename one item at a time.
- Click Start (the Windows logo) on the taskbar at the bottom of the screen.
- Type File Explorer, then click File Explorer in the search results to open it.
- Click the folder containing the item, such as Documents or Downloads, on the left. To open a folder inside it, double-click that folder by clicking twice quickly. Continue until you see the item.
- Click the item once so that its name is highlighted. Check that only this one item is highlighted.
- In the row of icons at the top of File Explorer, click Rename. It is the icon of a small box with a text cursor (a thin vertical line) inside it, to the right of the Cut, Copy and Paste icons. Pointing at an icon for a moment shows its name.
- The item's name becomes a box you can type in. For a file, the part before the ending, such as .txt, is highlighted. Type the new name to replace the highlighted part. Do not type a full stop followed by letters. These characters cannot be used in a name: \ / : * ? " < > |
- Press the Enter key. If a message says that changing a file name extension might make the file unusable, click No, then press the Esc key (top-left of the keyboard) to leave the name box without changing the name. Start again from step 4 with a name that has no full stop.
Expected result: The item shows its new name in the same folder.
