Windows 11

How to Update Windows 11

Also available for: macOS

What you need: A Windows 11 computer connected to the internet. Keep a laptop plugged into its charger throughout the update.

Before you begin: Save your work and close your documents. Windows may need to restart to finish the update.

  1. Click Start (the Windows logo) on the taskbar at the bottom of the screen.
  2. Type Settings, then click Settings in the search results to open it.
  3. Click Windows Update on the left.
  4. If you see Resume updates, click it. Click Check for updates when that button is available.
  5. Let Windows download and install the updates. If an update shows Download & install, click it unless that update is labeled Optional or Preview.
  6. If Restart now appears, click it. Leave the computer plugged in while Windows finishes. The screen may go blank and the computer may restart more than once; wait for Windows to return.
  7. Sign in when asked, then repeat steps 1–6 until the page shows You're up to date and no Restart now button is waiting.

Expected result: Windows Update shows You're up to date, and the computer has finished any requested restart.
