How to Make the Mouse or Trackpad Pointer Move Slower or Faster on a Mac

Also available for: Windows 11

What you need: A Mac with macOS Ventura 13 or later and a mouse or trackpad that is connected to it. A Mac laptop has its own trackpad, the flat pad below the keyboard. These steps change the speed of one of them, the one you choose in step 2.

  1. Click the Apple menu (the Apple logo) in the upper-left corner of the screen, then click System Settings.
  2. In the list on the left, click the device you use to move the pointer: Trackpad or Mouse. If you do not see Trackpad or Mouse, move the pointer over the list and scroll down. The speed you set applies only to the device you click here.
  3. Look for the Tracking speed slider. If you do not see it, click Point & Click near the top of the settings.
  4. Place the pointer on the slider's round handle, hold down the mouse or trackpad button, move the handle to the left to make the pointer slower or to the right to make it faster, then release the button.
  5. Move the pointer with the same mouse or trackpad and notice how fast it follows your hand. If it is still not comfortable, repeat step 4 and adjust the handle again.

Expected result: The pointer moves more slowly or more quickly than before when you use the mouse or trackpad you chose in step 2.
