macOS
How to Copy and Paste Text on a Mac
Also available for: Windows 11
What you need: A Mac, words on the screen that you want to copy, and a box or document where you can type.
- Open the message, web page or document that has the words you want to copy, and find those words on the screen.
- Place the pointer at the start of the first word, in front of its first letter. Hold down the mouse or trackpad button, move the pointer to the end of the last word, and release the button. The words you moved across are now highlighted, shown with a colored background.
- Hold down the Command key (marked with the ⌘ symbol, beside the space bar). While holding it, press the C key once (the third letter from the left in the bottom row of letters), then let go of both keys. Nothing looks different: the words stay where they are, and the Mac keeps a copy of them until you copy something else.
- Click inside the box or document where you want the words to go. A thin blinking line (the text cursor) shows where they will appear.
- Hold down the Command key again. While holding it, press the V key once (the fourth letter from the left in the bottom row of letters, beside C), then let go of both keys. The words appear at the blinking line.
Expected result: The words appear in the new place, and they are still in the original place too.
