How to Go Back to the Previous Page in Safari on a Mac

Also available for: Windows 11

What you need: A Mac with Safari open on a web page that appeared after you clicked a link on an earlier page.

  1. Look at the toolbar across the top of the Safari window. Find the Back button: an arrow pointing left, in the upper-left part of the window, before the address bar.
  2. Click the Back button once.
  3. Wait for the earlier page to appear.
  4. If the page did not change and the Back button looks pale, the link opened this page in a new tab. Move the pointer over this page's tab, near the top of the window, then click the X that appears on it to close the tab. The earlier page shows in its own tab.

Expected result: The page you were on before you clicked the link is showing again.
