How to Go to a Website by Typing Its Address in Safari on a Mac

Also available for: Windows 11

What you need: A Mac, Safari, and the address of the website you want, such as usa.gov. You can type any website address in the same way.

  1. Click Finder (the blue smiling face) in the Dock, the row of app icons along the edge of the screen.
  2. In the menu bar at the top of the screen, click Go, then Applications.
  3. Click Safari twice quickly to open it.
  4. Find the address bar: the wide box in the toolbar across the top of the Safari window.
  5. Click once inside the address bar. Any writing already in it becomes highlighted.
  6. Type the website address. What you type replaces the highlighted writing. If a list of suggestions appears below the box, keep typing the whole address.
  7. Check the address in the box letter by letter. Make sure it has no spaces and that the dot before the ending, such as .gov, is there.
  8. Press the Return key.

Expected result: The website opens in Safari, and its name appears in the address bar at the top.
