How to Save a Document in the Documents Folder on a Mac
Also available for: Windows 11
What you need: A Mac. These steps use TextEdit, which is included with macOS, to type a short note and save it in Documents.
- Click Finder (the blue smiling face) in the Dock, the row of app icons along the edge of the screen.
- Click Go at the top of the screen, then Applications.
- Scroll down to TextEdit and click it twice quickly to open it.
- If a window with a New Document button in its lower-left corner is showing, click New Document. If not, click File at the top of the screen, then New. A blank document opens.
- Click in the blank document and type a few words, such as Shopping list: milk, bread.
- Click File at the top of the screen, then Save. A box with a Save As name field opens.
- Click the Save As field three times quickly to highlight all the text in it, then type a name, such as Shopping list.
- Click the Where menu, which shows a place name, then click Documents in the list. If you see a larger window with a list of places on its left side instead, click Documents in that list.
- Click Save.
Expected result: The box closes, and the name you chose appears at the top of the TextEdit document window. The document is saved in Documents.
