How to Open a File You Saved on a Mac

Also available for: Windows 11

What you need: A Mac, the name of a file you saved, and the name of the folder you saved it in, such as the document from How to Save a Document in the Documents Folder on a Mac. If you do not remember the folder, first use How to Search for a File by Name on a Mac.

  1. Click Finder (the blue smiling face) in the Dock, the row of app icons along the edge of the screen.
  2. In the menu bar at the top of the screen, click Go, then the folder containing your file, such as Documents. If your folder is not in the list, click Home instead and open your folder from there. To open a folder inside it, click that folder twice quickly. Continue until you see your file.
  3. Look through the names for your file. The Mac may hide the ending of a name, such as .rtf. Scroll down to see more files.
  4. Click the file's name twice quickly. Wait a few seconds for it to open.

Expected result: The file opens in its own window, and its name appears at the top of that window.
